Thanksgiving is often seen as a kickoff to start the holiday season –
it’s a time to spend with family and eat feasts full of holiday
cuisine. In the hustle and bustle of the season, however, many individuals
find themselves slacking on their dental care and oral hygiene. In this
blog, our Ventura dentist shares a few helpful tips on how to keep your
teeth clean and healthy this Thanksgiving.
Stay Hydrated
Staying hydrated is perhaps one of the most important things to keep in
mind, especially when you’re eating a high volume of rich, sweet
foods. Regularly drinking water can help wash away any food build up and
debris, which can in turn prevent plaque from forming. Not only does drinking
water act as a light rinse in between eating, but it can also encourage
saliva flow which helps fight cavities from forming.
Brush and Floss
Even if you’re traveling out of town for Thanksgiving, you need to
be especially diligent about your dental hygiene. Although it's easy
to forego brushing or flossing, but it’s imperative that you stick
to your oral care routine. It’s recommended that you brush and floss
about half an hour after you’ve finished eating – this gives
your teeth ample time to produce protective minerals that can help fight
bacteria that may be forming.
Make a Post-Holiday Cleaning Appointment
If you’re especially concerned about cavities or gum disease, we
invite you to take a proactive approach in your dental hygiene and schedule
a post-holiday cleaning appointment and checkup. This can help prevent
any long term damage and eradicate any early signs of developing cavities.
