Tips for Making Flossing Part of Your Routine

|

It's the question that most of us dread answering at the dentist's office: "have you been flossing?" If you're like most Americans, the answer to that question is no—at least not regularly. While most dental patients are well-aware of the health benefits of flossing, few of them actually incorporate it into their regular brushing routine. Let's take a look at some easy steps everyone can take to get back into the habit of flossing.

Post a reminder

This is the easiest and the most obvious way to remember to floss in the morning or the evening. Using just a simple post-it note or another piece of paper can give you the cue you need to floss after brushing.

Embrace Technology

If you're like a lot of people, you're probably checking your email and social media accounts on mobile devices before you even get out of bed. Even if you aren't, setting a reminder on your smart device in the morning can help ensure that you floss before leaving your home.

Leave the Floss Out

Where is the floss in your bathroom right now? In a drawer? In a medicine cabinet? Leaving floss beside your toothbrush or any other morning routine essential will put the tools you need to floss front and center.

Get New Flossing Technology

One of the reasons why most people pass on flossing (even when they remember to do so) is because it can be a fairly awkward and uncomfortable activity. Luckily, there are many safe and effective flossing devices out there—like flossing sticks, which make flossing both easier and faster. Flossing picks and water picks are also available.

Get Away from the Sink

Flossing doesn't necessarily need to happen right along with brushing-- flossing any time of day is still advantageous to gum health. People have found success flossing in the shower, privately at work, and other opportunities that all allow for privacy and just a few moments to invest in their tooth and gum care.
