Can you remember the last time you had a teeth cleaning? If not, it may
be time to visit the dentist. Most dentists recommend that you come in
for a routine teeth cleaning about every six months, as this can help
to prevent conditions like gingivitis or
gum disease.
If plaque and bacteria are left unchecked, you could face serious oral
health issues down the line—costing you more money.
If your teeth have not been cleaned for some time, or you have started
to show signs of gum disease, your dentist may recommend that you get a
deep teeth cleaning. Also known as scaling and root planing, this non-surgical procedure involves
removing plaque build-up from the surface of your teeth and roots. A deep
cleaning can prevent the spread of gum disease.
The Difference Between a Routine Cleaning & Deep Cleaning
Routine teeth cleanings should be conducted every six months as a
preventative measure. During these cleanings, your dentist will scrape away excess tartar to
prevent a build-up of plaque and bacteria. If you are dealing with the
onset of a more serious dental health issue like gingivitis or gum disease,
however, your dentist may recommend that you undergo a more thorough cleaning.
Other reasons why your dentist may recommend a deep teeth cleaning:
- Your teeth are sensitive to temperature
- You are experiencing mild or severe tooth pain
- You have bad breath as a result of tooth decay
- You have an excess of plaque or bacteria
- Your teeth have become severely discolored
According to Dr. Stuart J. Forum, the president of the American Academy
of Periodontology, only the affected quadrant of your mouth needs to be
treated during a deep cleaning. “Treat only areas that are sick,”
he explains. If you are dealing with an advanced stage of gum disease,
it may be necessary to treat most areas of your mouth. This can be discussed
in detail with your Ventura family dentist.
What to Expect During a Deep Teeth Cleaning
If your dentist has recommended that you undergo a deep teeth cleaning,
they will be removing tartar buildup below the gum line. If your whole
mouth needs to be treated, your dentist may split this up between two
separate visits—which are usually no more than a week apart. For
your comfort, your dentist may numb the areas around your teeth and gums
with a localized anesthetic.
After the procedure, it is recommended that you continue to brush and floss
regularly. You should also stop all tobacco use for a period of time,
as this can reduce your ability to fight infection. All in all, scaling
and root planing is a relatively simple procedure with minimal recovery
time. If you have questions about the procedure, please do not hesitate to
speak with a dentist in Ventura, CA.
