I am terrified of going to the dentist. What can I do?
If you are afraid of going to the dentist, you are not alone. Up to 15%
of Americans avoid going to the dentist because of fear or anxiety. First,
let us know how you feel so we can discuss ways to make you feel more
comfortable. There are several strategies to help reduce this anxiety
such as numbing treatments, sedatives, and anesthesia.
Is it possible to change the shape of my teeth?
Yes, there are several options available to change the shape of teeth.
Some make teeth look longer, while others close spaces between teeth,
or repair chipped or cracked teeth. These options include bonding,
crowns,
veneers, and recontouring. Each option differs in regards to cost, durability,
and the best cosmetic approach to resolve a specific problem.
How effective are whitening toothpastes?
Whitening toothpastes can help remove surface stains, but they do not
contain bleach. None of the home whitening toothpastes come close to the
bleaching effect produced at your dentist's office with chair-side
bleaching or power bleaching. A home whitening toothpaste can lighten
your tooth's color by one shade, while light-activated
whitening conducted at your dentist's office can make your teeth up to eight
shades lighter.
When should I replace my toothbrush?
Replace your toothbrush about every 3 to 4 months, or when it begins to
show signs of wear and tear such as frayed bristles. If you have been
ill, or if anyone has been in your home while sick, ditch your toothbrush.
Viruses and bacteria can live on an infected toothbrush for weeks, and
continue to cause illness. This applies to
all toothbrushes, including electric or power models.
How long do porcelain veneers last?
The lifetime of porcelain veneers is between 7 and 20 years. If veneers
come off or chip, they can be repaired or replaced. Also, as time passes
the living tooth or gum tissue surrounding the veneers will undergo changes,
which may require alterations to the veneers.
Are porcelain veneers susceptive to staining?
No, porcelain veneers do not stain.
What are the benefits of cosmetic dentistry?
Cosmetic dentistry does much more than give you a beautiful smile. The latest techniques
and materials not only help you look great, they help you have healthier
teeth that function better.
I have diabetes. When should I visit the dentist?
If your blood sugar is not controlled, it may be better to schedule morning
appointments when your blood glucose levels are under better control.
If you have a dental appointment, be sure to eat and take your medications
as directed. Inform your dentist about your health status and keep your
mouth in good health.
